LeBreton touted as HQ2 site

Ottawa’s bid to become home to the second global headquarters of online retail giant Amazon has taken a dramatic downtown turn.

Invest Ottawa, the city-funded economic development agency charged with convincing Amazon to choose Canada’s capital over hundreds of other contenders from around the world, has made public the promotional video it recently sent to the Seattle-based company.

And the pitch makes clear that the City of Ottawa, along with sister city Gatineau and the other key partners in the bid, believes the key attraction for Amazon and the estimated 50,000 “HQ2” employees would be a centralized location at LeBreton Flats, next to the planned Rendez-vous LeBreton development (including a new NHL hockey stadium) and the proposed Zibi commercial-condo project on the nearby Chaudière Islands and adjacent Gatineau shoreline.

“Amazon’s quest for a setting worthy of HQ2 happily coincided with the beginning of massive redevelopment projects along the shorelines of the cities of Ottawa and Gatineau on the might Ottawa River,” states the Invest Ottawa bid document. “Approximately 120 acres of pre-planned and close to shovel-ready public and private lands (are) poised for development.”
