Maria Knapik and Friends presents its annual Benefit Concert for the International Day of the Child at 7:30 p.m. at Dominion-Chalmers United Church, 355 Cooper St. The concert will feature such world-class performers as Maria Knapik (soprano), Julie Nesrallah (mezzo-soprano), James O’Farrell (tenor), and Marc Boucher (baritone) in a program that includes Mozart’s Exultate Jubilate and Vesperae solemnes de confessore and Vivaldi’s Gloria. Conducting Montreal’s World Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir, the Ottawa Classical Choir, and Les Chanteurs de Sainte-Thérèse Choir will be Vasyl Vasylenko from Donetsk, Ukraine. Our Old Ottawa South Environment Group, together with ECOS, is sponsoring You and the End of Cheap Oil – Film and Discussion from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Ottawa South Community Centre (The Firehall), 260 Sunnyside Ave. Activities will include the film The End of Suburbia, displays on what people can do to reduce their carbon emissions, and a short discussion.

A garden lecture series hosted by Friends of the Central Experimental Farm and presented by master gardeners on 7 to 9 p.m., in building 72, Arboretum, Central Experimental Farm. Topics covered will include water gardening, ground covers, shade gardening and colours throughout the seasons. Prostate cancer diagnosis? Meet and talk with survivors about their experience with diagnosis and treatment. PCAO is the support group for men and offers special mentoring for the newly-diagnosed and their families to help them work their way through this experience. Five noon-hour recitals will be presented at St. Andrew’s Church, 82 Kent St., on Spring Tuesdays, April 17-May 15, from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. Thomas Annand, director of music at St. Andrew’s, will give the series’ opening on April 17. He will play works by J. S. Bach, and Wesley, among others. The Ottawa Public Library presents an Evening of Latino-Canadian Literature and Music at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the main library, 120 Metcalf St. The program will feature Chilean-Canadian author Camila Reimers and the music of Duetto Forte with an original program. The program will be in both Spanish and English.

The Meibion Prysor Choir, a male voice choir from Wales, will be concluding its Canadian tour with a one-night benefit concert at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 470 Roosevelt Ave., at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $10, with all proceeds going to assist Highland Park Wesleyan Church in running a sports camp for at-risk youth in Odessa, Ukraine later this summer. The 2007 edition of the Directory of Resources for Senior Citizens in Ottawa is now on sale. Published by the Senior Citizens Council of Ottawa, the directory is available at the council’s office, 250 City Centre Ave., Ste. 302, for $5 ($4 for members) and $8 by mail. The directory is useful for anyone who works or lives with or cares for seniors.

The Glebe Centre, 950 Bank St., is seeking mature volunteers to operate its gift shop and commit one day a week (Monday, Wednesday or Friday) between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Volunteer positions are also available on an on-call/casual basis. The centre is also seeking volunteers to greet and welcome residents, families and visitors as a main reception hostess. This includes some clerical duties. The auxiliary of the Ottawa Humane Society meets at 1:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month at the Real Canadian Superstore (Loblaws), 190 Richmond Road, Ottawa New members are welcome.
