The biggest downtown development in 25 years is underway at the corner of O’Connor and Slater streets.

Export Development Canada plans to move into the new building upon completion in late 2011.

The crown corporation is expected to occupy all of the available office space in the 18-storey, 535,000-square-foot building, with retailers on street-level.

The joint venture from Broccolini Construction Inc. and Canderel will seek LEED Gold certification, an environmental standard assessed by the Canada Green Building Council. The exterior of the building will consist largely of metal and glass in order to maximize natural light.

The project is valued at $150 million and construction began May 10.

Export Development Canada helps Canadian exporters conduct business in foreign markets through loans, insurance and other financial services. It currently leases space at two other locations on Laurier Avenue and further south on O’Connor Street.

All of its employees will move into the new location, where EDC has signed a 20-year lease.
