Register in overcrowded schools as normal – school board

Parents should follow normal registration procedures when enrolling their children in kindergarten and French immersion programs despite the threat of school overcrowding, said the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board.

Centretown’s Elgin Street Public School is one of several Ottawa schools that are over-capacity.

The Glebe’s Hopewell Avenue Public School, Old Ottawa South’s First Avenue Public School and Kanata’s Roch Carrier Elementary, Katimavik Elementary, and Stephen Leacock Public Schools face the same problem.

Registration for kindergarten will be from Jan. 31 to Feb. 4, while enrollment for middle French immersion is from Feb. 22 to 28.
Students wishing to make a transfer will have to do so between Feb. 14 and 25.

The board of trustees met twice earlier this month to discuss possible solutions to be implemented in September 2011. Many of them included moving students to different schools.

The board is expected to make a decision at the meeting on Feb. 22.
