Adeline Street

Adeline Street is a small two-way street located on the edge of Little Italy. It runs east to west, from Rochester Street to a dead end just west of Preston Street.

Serge Barbe, an archivist with the City of Ottawa, says the street is most likely named after Adeline Odell.

Adeline’s husband, Horace Odell, owned this land in the 19th century. When Horace died in 1891, the land was left to Adeline and her son, Walter. Barbe says he thinks the street became Adeline Street when a land survey was completed after Horace’s death.

Adeline Street has changed in many ways since it was created in 1891.

One noticeable feature is the array of four large parking lots scattered across the 300 metres of the street. There are two large ones at the corner of Rochester and Adeline streets, a third at Adeline and Norfolk Avenue, and a fourth at the dead-end to the west.

Tall, red-brick federal government buildings border the east-end of the street at Rochester Street.
Adeline is a mix of recently renovated family homes and student housing with the exception of one restaurant, Lorenzo’s Pizzeria. Lorenzo’s has been a local favourite since it opened in 1976.
