Lack of progress on parole office frustrates activist

Ottawa centre citizens remain frustrated at the lack of progress towards the relocation of the Gilmour Street parole office.

"It is now June 22 – summer –  but the Parole Office is still located at 191 Gilmour Street opposite Elgin Street School and the Monument to Murdered and Abused Women. The current location of the Parole Office is in direct violation of Corrections written policy (attached) not to be within 300 metres of a school or playground," wrote Albert Galpin in an email to MP Paul Dewar's constituency office.

Galpin has been a notable activist in lobbying for the relocation of the Ottawa Parole Office since confirmation of its move was made back in 2006, by then-Minister of Public Safety, Stockwell Day.

Following Galpin's email, he received a response two days later from Dewar's constituency assistant, Suzanne MacLeod, who wrote that she brought it to Dewar's attention.

Since then, Galpin says, he hasn't received an update about the project.

"People are just starting to really lose any kind of faith in Corrections Canada and Public Works," said Galpin.

Centretown News reported in March that that Federal Public Works Minister Rona Ambrose confirmed in February that the move would take place in May, but the project has received delays ever since.

At this point, Galpin says, he just wants the move to take place before the beginning of the school year in September.

Numerous attempts were made to contact Dewar's office for comment, but no response was received.
