Ottawa police mourns death of ‘well-respected’ officer

UPDATE: Staff Sgt. Kalid Ghadban, 43, has died after suspected suicide at the Ottawa Police Service headquarters on 474 Elgin St., according to an official statement by Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordeleau.

“I am saddened to report that a well-respected and well-loved member of our service died this afternoon,” wrote Bordeleau.

He succumbed to his injuries shortly after 1 p.m., according to the latest statement issued by police Sunday night.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has started to look into the incident, according to the statement.

“Those who have worked with him know him as an excellent example of a hard-working, dedicated officer who loved his job,” stated Bordeleau.

Ghadban’s death comes on the same day as a memorial dedicated to fallen police officers took place on Parliament Hill.

He oversaw high-profile investigations in the community, including the recent break-in at the home of Liberal leader Justin Trudeau.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter.
