Overnight fire contained at Chateau Laurier

Guests at the Chateau Laurier were temporarily evacuated from their rooms after a fire broke out in the sauna late Thursday evening.

Firefighters arrived at the historic hotel just after 11:40 p.m. and the fire was under control by midnight, according to the Ottawa Citizen.

Guests waited in the lobby until the blaze was contained and were then allowed back to their rooms.

They were given blankets and hot chocolate while they waited and no injuries were reported.

Fire officials suspect the fire started because of a light fixture in the sauna, but an investigation is ongoing. The fire was contained to the sauna because a structure of stone surrounded it.

Damage is estimated at $12,000.
