It’s a sign of the times. Big, bold, neon and shrouded in controversy.
The golden arches hanging outside McDonald’s restaurant on Elgin Street has caused some commotion among businesses and residents. They say the 42-square-foot sign should be reduced to conform with other signs on the street.

“Do you know what you have to do to open a small business?” asks Arlene Flock from Flagworks Inc. in Calgary. “It’s crazy.”
As a small business owner, Flock knows first hand. She is one of 25 small business owners who sit on the small business advisory committee for Revenue Canada. Part of her job is to advise Revenue Canada on issues concerning small businesses.
Nobody at Canada Post seems to see the big picture. One wonders whether those in this declining service realize the publicity nightmare a strike is causing.
Managers and employees can blame each other all they want. But, at the end of the day, Canadians will be looking for alternatives to the post office.

The NHL All-Star Game is one of the most spectacular events in hockey, and, arguably, all of sports. The entire hockey world watches, as its elite superstars compete for one weekend, in a chosen city.
Thousands of fans are attracted to the host city for the game and festivities. The economic spin-offs from hosting an all-star game are lucrative, as hotels, restaurants, stores and sports bars all benefit.
Unfortunately, Ottawa won’t reap these rewards anytime soon.
