Team Homan goes for gold

Centretown’s own Team Homan will be competing for the gold medal at the CPT World Women’s Curling Championships in Beijing after a 7-3 victory in the 1-2 Page Playoff game on Friday against Russia’s Team Sidorova.
Skip Rachel Homan and her team from the Ottawa Curling Club are Canada’s representative at the tournament and have had a sensational showing thus far, going a perfect 11-0 through the round robin before winning their first playoff game.
Homan’s rink scored the game’s first point in the second end, before giving up a pair of points to Russia in the following end.
The Canadian squad responded with a deuce of their own in the fourth end and then stole another point in the fifth. Russia scored one in the sixth end, but Canada scored a point in the seventh, eighth and ninth ends.
After Canada took a four-point lead, the two teams shook hands and Team Homan left the ice victorious, earning a berth in the gold medal game on Sunday.
Homan, third Emma Miskew, second Joanne Courtney and lead Lisa Weagle haven’t had to spend much time on the ice en route to the championship draw, as only three of their 12 matches have gone the full 10 ends. The previous game against Russia was one of those games, and was the only game in which Canada was forced to play an extra end.
The gold medal game takes place Sunday at 3 p.m. EST and can be seen on TSN.
