Mayor Jim Watson previewed a series of events and initiatives heading to Ottawa throughout 2017 during his annual “State of the City” address at City Hall Wednesday morning.
The announcement comes as the city prepares to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary this year.
According to a press release, Ottawa will play host to 10 million visitors over the course of the year, at events such as the Grey Cup and the 2017 Juno Awards.
Watson also highlighted the openings of new developments and facilities, such as the redevelopment of the National Arts Centre and George Street Plaza, and the unveiling of the Stanley Cup monument at the corner of Sparks and Elgin streets.
Among the noted initiatives was the introduction of the EquiPass, Ottawa’s “new, affordable” transit pass, and a commitment to building affordable and supportive housing developments.
Watson also announced an Aboriginal Awareness Day to take place in June, which will recognize all First Nations, Inuit and Métis people as well as their elders and ancestors for their contributions to the land.
