A sculptural representation of the famous silver “punch bowl” that evolved into the multi-tiered Stanley Cup was put in place on Oct. 18 at the east end of Sparks Street.

Years in the making, the planned monument to the birth of the Stanley Cup — which can be traced to a ceremony at a downtown Ottawa hotel in March 1892 — was officially unveiled on Oct. 28.

The creation of the monument comes ahead of the upcoming 100th anniversary of the first two NHL games played in Montreal and Ottawa on Dec. 19, 1917.

The league’s centennial is also being celebrated with an outdoor match — the Scotiabank NHL100 Classic between the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens — at Lansdowne Park’s TD Place on Dec. 16.
