Latest Soup Ottawa winner to wrap abuse victims in blankets ‘of loving kindness’
By Hilary Laffrenier
The latest Soup Ottawa event raised more than $1,000 for a project aimed at helping survivors of sexual abuse and assault.
More than 100 people attended the March 26 event — the 15th Soup Ottawa charity project pitch to date — at Impact Hub on Slater Street.
Attendees paid $10 for a bowl of locally-made soup and bread, as well as an opportunity to vote on their favourite community project.
Over the course of the evening, five local groups gave presentations pitching their projects. As always at Soup Ottawa gatherings, the one with the most votes from the audience received all of the proceeds from the evening to help make their dream a reality.
Among the five presenters was Ausome Ottawa, a project seeking to “enrich the lives of families living with autism through sport and recreation.”
Another was Project RMORE, which proposed to present crocheted blankets for victims of sexual violence to “wrap them in loving kindness.”
The winner was Project RMORE, which collected $1,030.
“The funding will be used to purchase materials for the blankets and to create a website to grow their volunteer and donation base,” said Soup Ottawa.
