The City of Ottawa announced the locations of 20 new red light cameras that will be installed by the end of 2017, with six of them coming into the Centretown area.

The new locations announced on Monday are: Arlington Avenue at Kent Street, Bay Street at Slater Street, Catherine Street at Kent Street, Elgin Street at Slater Street, Gladstone Avenue at Rochester Street and Lyon Street at Slater Street.

These new additions will bring the total number of red light cameras in the downtown core to 13, with six cameras already installed in Centretown at: Albert Street at Booth Street, Albert Street at Kent Street, Booth Street at Wellington Street, Bronson Avenue at Slater Street, Catherine Street at Kent Street and Catherine Street at O’Connor Street near the Hwy. 417 westbound on-ramp.

Throughout the city, there will be a total of 54 red light cameras by 2018, once installation of the 20 new cameras is complete.

The red light cameras operate using a two-photo process. A picture is first taken when a vehicle is about to enter an intersection on a red light, then a second photograph depicts the vehicle in the intersection.

Running a red light earns offenders a $260 fine, plus a $5 service fee and $60 victim surcharge, according to the City of Ottawa website.
