In a series of short profiles, Capital Current introduces key persons of influence in the city to the community. We begin with the Ottawa Rapid FC’s Chief Sport Officer.
Who is she?
Heidi Bloomfield is the Chief Sport Officer for the Ottawa Rapid FC, the city’s new professional women’s soccer team. The Montrealer moved to Ottawa to help launch the Northern Super League’s team here.
What’s her background?
Bloomfield has an extensive background in sport starting in 1992 as a varsity soccer player at McGill University. She went on to serve as an administrative assistant for the Ottawa Senators, a ticketing and hospitality manager for the FIFA Women’s World Cup and Festival Team Lead for the Spartan Race, an obstacle course for fitness gurus.
“I’ve learned so much from the people I’ve worked with and I’ve pulled all that together to help me in this role,” she told Capital Current.
What is she known for?
Aside from her work with the Rapid, Bloomfield is a champion of women’s sport in the city.
The team says “with strong leadership and a community-first approach, Ottawa Rapid FC are not only making history on the pitch — they’re building something much bigger for generations to come.” In an interview, Bloomfield expanded on that claim, saying she hopes to get out in the community as much as possible.
“We’ve been trying to get out and meet with the all the different clubs in Ottawa, Gatineau, Kingston, Cornwall, trying to get out there and see how we can serve the community,” she said.
The Ottawa Rapid represents a new era for women’s soccer, according to an article in the Glebe Report. Early on, Bloomfield was a possible investor, but the team’s co-founder and CEO, Thomas Gilbert, quickly realized she would be able to play a significant role in the senior management with the team.
A little-known fact about Bloomfield
Bloomfield has caught the travel bug. She said she has recently been to Portugal, Morocco and Utah.
