Who is Sammita Chowdhury?
Sammita Chowdhury is a second-year biomedical science student at the University of Ottawa. She was recognized as the 2025 Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award winner and one of Youth Ottawa’s 21 Under 21 for her community involvement.
What’s her background?
Growing up in Saskatchewan as one of the few people of colour in her community, she said she developed an awareness of social inequity, inspiring her interest in volunteer work.
“As a woman and a person of colour, I have an intersectional identity that impacted the way I move through society,” she said.
Her volunteer journey began in high school when she joined the Purple Sisters Youth Advisory Committee, which plans initiatives to support youth and combat gender-based violence. Since then, she has also contributed to national discussions on housing and youth equity.
“I’m very passionate about everything I do,” she said. “It inspires me to keep going even with my studies.”
What’s she known for in Ottawa?
In Ottawa, Chowdhury is known for her advocacy and youth engagement efforts. “I’ve recently been recognized for my work, which is such an honour, and I hope to keep doing more in the future,” she said.
Her interest in health care led her to volunteer in the CHEO emergency department. She also volunteers with Relay for Life, supporting cancer research and awareness efforts through the Canadian Cancer Society.
“I want to learn more about health care policies and how we can improve health outcomes in Canada,” she said.

Her friend, Shantanu Nath, described Chowdhury as “an exceptionally motivated individual whose dedication inspires those around her.”
The Ottawa Business Journal highlighted her as the 2025 Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award winner, noting she has donated more than 900 volunteer hours over the past year.
What’s something people don’t know about her?
Chowdhury loves exploring the city and discovering new spots. “I enjoy Ottawa,” she said. “We have great cafés and some beautiful architecture downtown.”
