OTTAWA – Canadian Blood Services reached its lowest level of blood supply in seven years in October 2014. In 2013, Health Canada reduced the lifetime donor ban on men-who-have-sex-with-men to five years. This specific regulation continues to attract criticism and controversy.

Even with a potentially larger donor pool, Canada’s independent blood agency struggles to generate consistent donations.
