At centre ice, Ottawa’s Bradley Horner and Peterborough’s Cam Gauvreau dropped their gloves for what would be the first of three fights.
In 60 minutes of play Friday, there were 28 penalties total. Safe to say, Peterborough and Ottawa aren’t exactly on the best of terms. During Ottawa’s dominating 6-1 win, it showed.
The two teams have a troubled past with each other. Last season, when Ottawa had been the most dominant team in the regular season – with 107 points in 68 games – the most of any team, the Petes still managed to beat them in the playoffs. They would go on to win the J. Ross Robertson Cup that year.
This season, Peterborough hasn’t seen as much success. Losing their sixth game in a row against Ottawa, the Petes are second-last in their conference, with 38 points in 50 games.
Since the start of the new year, the Petes have won only two of the 16 games.
Samuel Mayer is one of Ottawa’s latest additions to the team, and a former Pete. The Ottawa native said it was fun to play against some former teammates and friends. Mayer also recorded a goal against Peterborough.
“Definitely feel good about it,” he said. “It’s a lot of fun.”
Nor did Mayer mind the rough stuff.
“I think they’re all scared of me,” the 6’3″, 202 pound left defenceman chuckled. “Sometimes things happen on the ice and it gets really physical. It got a little bit dirty out there, but obviously I’m a bigger guy and I love that game.”
Ottawa tied their season series against Peterborough at three a piece for both teams. Friday was their first win at home against the Petes.
Adding to their success is Ottawa’s eight-game point streak. The last time they lost in regulation was in January against Saginaw. The 67’s are in third in the East Division with 56 points and games in hand against the teams ahead of them.
