Meet Victor Vigas Alvarez
I got started in news by delivering newspapers in my neighborhood in Ottawa. I am a first-generation Canadian whose parents immigrated from Cuba. Storytelling has always been my obsession. I was led into journalism in Grade 11, when my English teacher said: ‘You’re going to be a writer.’ I began postsecondary studies at Concordia University in journalism and creative writing. At Concordia, I worked on student-run media, The Concordian as a volunteer writer at first but I became Music Editor within a year covering Montreal’s music scene and local impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result of pandemic lockdowns, I moved back home and transferred into journalism at Carleton University, where I received the K. Phyllis Wilson scholarship in Journalism. In the two years since, my love of storytelling has expanded to include audio, video and photo-based storytelling. My interests in storytelling have ranged from music reviews to municipal politics to psychedelics. My work has appeared in National Post, Ottawa Citizen, Glide Magazine and Exclaim! to name a few outlets.
Meet Audrey Gunn
I am a journalism and humanities student at Carleton University and excited to join the Capital Current team as a reporter this summer. I am from the small town of Grand Forks, British Columbia, and I moved to Ottawa to pursue a career in journalism while exploring my interest in literature, religion, history and the arts through the College of the Humanities. I have a passion for philosophy and spends much of my free time reading. My journalism career began as a volunteer reporter with the Charlatan, Carleton’s independent student newspaper, where I gained an affinity for the student politics beat. In third year I served as news editor. I have also worked as a multimedia journalist for Black Press Media in B.C., covering all kinds of community news, from municipal politics to theatre reviews. I am drawn to stories about people making a difference in their community and hopes to learn more about science and arts reporting.
Meet Alex Dines
I am a journalist originally from Vancouver, B.C. I am in my second year of the Master’s of Journalism program at Carleton University. I’m currently writing my master’s research project about the injustices women face as they move through the Canadian prison system. In 2023, I produced a podcast with Farm Radio International about how rural farmers in Uganda are combating climate change with nature-based solutions. The episode featured a community who was tackling deforestation and poverty by planting trees, selling seedlings and beekeeping. My work has also appeared on CBC Ottawa’s website and the Ottawa Citizen. In my spare time, I can be found working out in the gym, falling down rabbit holes on the internet and listening to Mariah Carey all year long. I will be part of a reporting team this May and June on Capitalcurrent.ca.
Meet Ali Al Ashoor
I am a poet and journalist. I have a bachelor’s degree in journalism and history from Carleton University. My journalism career began in 2011 as a response to media coverage of the protests and demonstrations during the so-called Arab Spring. In 2015, I became a columnist at Al Sharq, a Saudi newspaper. I have since written for several Arab news outlets and magazines including As-Safir, Al-Hayat, Al Akhbar, Jadaliyya, and Al Mayadeen. I moved to Canada in 2018 to start a new life. My work has appeared in Canadian news outlets including The Maple, the National Post and Capital Current.
