Every week, the Midweek team relies on the newsroom printer to deliver multiple copies of the script for the entire one-hour show. Every story, every word, every studio direction for the week’s 60-minute production printed on several reams of paper must be given to the hosts, show producer, music producer and Dave Sarazin who operates the studio, well before airtime.

Today was the day the ink began to run out.

In the middle of printing.

Luckily, it was a situation teaching assistant Martin Halek and prof. Nana aba were prepared for. Two weeks prior, they had a new cartridge stored in a cabinet nearby for this very reason. Being prepared for a radio show, for (almost) anything is key. Martin replaced the cartridge, and printing continued.

Another intense moment: in an effort to make two stories about the cuts to post-secondary institutions flow together editorially, we had a last minute script edit moments before the hosts were to read the new line. Show producer Bo-Ning Gao rushed into the classroom for a quick crowd-sourced sentence, then ran back to the studio and into the hosts’ booth to give them the edited script. It worked.

Often, the week after Reading Week can be a little bumpy. But with planning and great effort by the production team and same-day reporters, the show was smooth. It featured Nadia Al-Zanbouri’s story on a walkathon called The Coldest Night of the Year, Jessica Campbell’s piece on swing dance and its origins with Black artists and communities, and Kathryn Fraser sat down with hosts Julien Brombach and Noureen Moghadam to talk about a film premiere by the Ghost Rooster Collective, a group of artists with disabilities.

A great job by the team. Listen to the show below.
