This show was recorded in front of a live studio audience! More on that later.
Show 7 started with its elbows up—a documentary about a hundreds-strong protest on Parliament Hill rallying against American annexation threats and tariffs. Then, a sit-down with 2025’s Kesterton speaker, Shireen Ahmed, the first sports journalist to deliver the lecture. Rounding out the first set: a follow-up on an International Women’s Day event walking attendees through menopause.
Returning to the theme of protest, back to back items dealt with three very different kinds of pushback. First, how a local choir is singing its resistance to world events with classic protest music. Reporter Bo-Ning Gao sat down with hosts Jayden Dill and Jessica Campbell with the latest developments from the trial of a climate protester—who set a stroller on fire on Parliament Hill two years ago. And to round it out, an update on a group of Ottawa tenants fighting to keep their homes.
The bottom half of the show featured West-African fusion fare, microplastics on and in the mind, and supportive housing and soup kitchens, and March break museum matters.
No show is set in stone, and more than a few last minute changes hit the books right before going to air—and by books we mean the dozens of pages making up our six identical scripts. Thankfully, cool heads prevailed and team efforts saw everything fixed with barely a minute to spare.
We also had our first in-studio spectators of the season! CKCU producer and host Chris White brought Brookfield High School co-op student Ezra Dark to show off what goes into a show. Dark is considering a stint in J-school, and we’ll know soon enough if we tipped the balance!
