When Maëlys McArdle was young, she joined a group of hackers. She found a community and a way to feel empowered. She eventually lost touch with that part of her life and went to university to study geography. But, when she couldn’t find a job, McArdle returned to her old interest and became a software developer.
Her two passions merged when McArdle, a trans woman, developed an open-source map where people in the Ottawa trans community can report incidents of harassment and transphobia.
In this video, McArdle discusses her project and how data can be used as a form of self-care when anecdotes aren’t enough.
