Women seeking work in Centretown have one less place to turn to as of March 31.
The Women’s Career Counselling Centre on Catherine Street has helped women look for work since 1974. It’s closing because its funding has been cut.
The centre stopped accepting clients in January after the last funding extension from Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC).
A local tenants’ rights group will close unless it receives funding from the region or the city.
“These aren’t the best of times,” says Dan McIntyre, president and sole remaining employee of the Federation of Ottawa-Carleton Tenants’ Associations. “The federation is on very shaky ground.”

Ottawa Centre MP Mac Harb wants to go down in Canadian history on two counts: for introducing the most private members’ bills on one subject at one time in the House of Commons and for his attention to children’s issues.
On Feb. 13, backbencher Harb and fellow Liberal Jean Augustine (Etobicoke-Lakeshore) introduced 38 bills to Parliament, 35 of which are aimed at strengthening children’s rights in Canada.

Beginning in September, the Ontario government will be pulling out its chequebook for students who receive Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) loans.
Education and Training Minister Dave Johnson announced Feb. 13 that Ontario will spend $535 million on grants to students between 1998 and 1999. That’s an increase of $134 million from 1995 to 1996.
