Ex-Centretown resident honoured

A former Centretown resident has been named Ontario Senior of the year.

Born on Arlington Street, Rita Proulx, 83, was cited as one of Ottawa’s and Ontario’s best-known volunteers last week. The award was presented by Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, Deputy Prime Minister Herb Gray and Coun. Shawn Little.

Proulx began her volunteer work in 1973 and since then she has devoted much of her time to the Westboro Golden Age Kids, the Ottawa Senior’s Council and the United Senior Citizen of Ontario. In 1997, city council named a small kitchen in the Hintonburg Community Centre “Rita’s Tea Shoppe.”

Proulx said she likes “helping people.”
