Daniel Van Vliet’s landlord laughed when he asked for permission to plant a garden in his front yard.
He said nothing would grow there, but Van Vliet planted seeds anyway.
This spring — like the past six — sunflowers, perennial and echinacea flowers will bloom in his garden in front of his golden triangle neighborhood home.
Buses, cars and a light rail commuter train could all be using Albert and Slater streets as early as 2009, and some area businesses are concerned with the city’s plan.
This is in response to an article published in your paper on Feb. 11, entitled “Parole Office Move Cost $600K.”
As district director responsible for the Ottawa parole Office, I believe it is imperative that I respond to the concerns raised by community residents in regards to the new location of our Parole Office and to ensure the readers that we have taken and will continue to take their concerns seriously.
There were 8,664 homeless people living in Ottawa shelters last year — a large portion of them on social assistance. This includes people who have lost their jobs or can’t work due to chronic physical or mental health problems and need financial assistance from the government to get back on their feet.
