Enough development on Elgin St.

Maclaren’s Bar on Elgin Street has proposed to close off the little remaining open space on the corner of Maclaren and Elgin streets to open up a yet another bar patio in the area.

The patio would located next to the same building housing the Ottawa Parole Office which in turn tried to locate opposite Elgin Street Elementary School.

Thanks to the hard work and leadership of local politicians, residents and parents, the Parole Office is leaving within the next two years.

However, the proposal to open another patio bar on Elgin Street, where already crowds pour on to neighbouring residential streets after bar closing, generating incidents of violence, vandalized private property and automobiles, spreading garbage and debris, creates increased pressure on our stretched police resources.

The Maclaren’s bar patio proposal defies common sense and is an affront to local residents that are forced to cope with the increasing pressure being inflicted on our residential neighbourhood.

The City of Ottawa is trying to encourage families to live in the downtown core. Safe schools, a clean environment, a vibrant commercial-retail district, and green space are what residents of Centretown want.

Enough on Elgin Street!

Albert Galpin,

Frank Street
