Lisgar Collegiate Institute’s senior boys’ soccer team pulled from behind to make it to the National Capital Secondary Schools Athletic Association’s playoffs.
The team tied Orleans high school Beatrice-Desloges 3-3 on Tuesday.
This put the team in fifth place with eight points.
Tyvon Greene, a senior player on the team, had said last week that only the top four teams from each division, east and west, would make the play-offs, but was mistaken.
“We all, including my coach, forgot that it’s the top 12 teams in total — 6 from each division — who advance,” said Greene. “We were wonderfully surprised to find out that we had, in fact, made the playoffs.”
The team begins post-season play in Barrhaven on Tuesday against St. Joseph Catholic High School.
St. Joseph placed fourth in the west division.
If Lisgar wins on Tuesday, the team will play St. Pius X Catholic High School in quarter-final action on Thursday.
Pius finished first in Lisgar’s division, defeating the Centretown high school 2-0 when the teams met during the regular season.
