Lisgar Collegiate Institute's senior boys' soccer team was defeated 2-1 on Friday by St. Pius X Catholic High School, eliminating Lisgar from the National Capital Secondary School Athletic Association's playoffs.
Colin Findlater, Lisgar's coach, says his team was confident going into the quarter-final game, even with a tight loss to St. Pius X in the regular season.
The first half was quiet until a penalty kick was called against Lisgar, resulting in the first goal for the X-Men.
St. Pius X kept the pressure on the Lisgar boys in the second half, until midfielder Pablo Srugo evened the score with a shot from outside the box that found the top corner of the net.
With just over 10 minutes left in the game, the X-Men scored again on an awkward giveaway, giving them all they needed for the win.
"You left it all out on the field today and the game was close because of it," Findlater told the team in a huddle after the game.
Srugo, Lisgar's only goal scorer, says he thought the team played well, especially after finishing fifth overall during the regular season.
"We were finally able to move the ball around and take some shots in the second half," said Srugo, crediting his team's mobility for his equalizing goal.
"It was a hard fought battle and that's why it's so disappointing," says Findlater.
St. Pius X will go on to the semi-final against the winner of the quarter-final between All Saints Catholic High School and St. Matthew Catholic High School.
