Ontario falls to Manitoba in women’s curling

There is a sense of heartbreak at Centretown's Ottawa Curling Club today.

Rachel Homan and her Ontario team, who call the curling club home, fell 7-4 to Manitoba in the Canadian Women's Junior Curling Championship final in Salmon Arm, B.C.

Manitoba's Kaitlyn Lawes and her team got a piece of revenge on Homan, who won the round robin encounter by the same 7-4 score.

The Homan rink also includes sisters Lynn and Alyson Kreviazuk and Emma Miskew.

It was a low-scoring, back-and-forth affair for most of the game. Manitoba's rink took charge in the seventh, however, when they scored two to take their first lead of the game, 3-2.

Lawes, who is playing in her final year of junior competition, stole another point in the eighth end, when Homan missed a very tough double takeout.

Homan did come back to score two in the ninth, tying the game at four.

But Lawes clinched the game with three in the 10th and final end after Homan missed a hit-and-roll with her last shot.

Homan's squad was the favourite heading into Sunday's final after they finished first in the round robin, and earned an automatic berth into the final.

For Lawes, it is the second national championship in a row.

Homan, on the other hand, is only 19, and will compete in the juniors next year.
