Correctional Service Canada is now considering two new locations for the Ottawa parole office, one of which is in Centretown. The new potential site at 1010 Somerset St., which borders on Plouffe Park, was put on a list of federally owned properties up for sale two years ago. The second location is 831 Industrial Ave. in the city’s east end.
The parole office is currently located at 191 Gilmour St. Many concerns have been raised about the office’s proximity to Elgin Street Public School. Correctional Service Canada has also apparently outgrown their current space and due to the fact that their lease will expire this coming September, they have been searching for a new larger space.
In January, 116 Albert St. seemed likely to be chosen for the new Ottawa parole office. An office space at 500 Terminal Av. was also being considered until the owner withdrew from the bidding. By February, the location on Albert was no longer in the running – it was reported that the owner of the space on Albert Street had never formally made a bid.
Correctional Services Canada will be holding public consultations on the new potential sites at town hall meetings on Mar. 30 and Mar. 31. Members of the public can learn more or give their feedback until April.1 at www.csc-scc.gc.ca/consultation .
