The Ottawa Sooners may belong back in the Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL) but they have a lot of work to do if they want to end up on top.
The Sooners suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of the Edmonton Wildcats’ incredible defence in Sunday’s Intergold Cup semifinal held at Keith Harris Stadium at Carleton University.
The Sooners lost 31-3 to the Wildcats, who scored their first touchdown in their second drive of the game. At 7-0, the Wildcats already had enough points to win the game.
Tyler Crapigna scored the only points for the Sooners on a 28-yard field goal.
The Prairie Football Conference ended a week before, giving the Wildcats an extra week of downtime and the ability to prepare and watch the Sooners play live.
But the Sooners had no downtime. Last weekend, the team won the Ontario Football Championship with a 14-11 lead over the St. Leonard Cougars.
The Wildcats will go on to face the Vancouver Island Raiders for the national title Nov. 14 in Vancouver.
This year marked the Sooners’ first season back in the CJFL in 14 years. They may not have won the Intergold Cup, but they have proven they belong in the national league.
The Sooners' total wins and losses this season was 8-3.
