Students, children and hockey fans alike flocked to the Ravens’ Nest as Carleton University played host to Sweden’s national junior hockey team.
The Ravens could not find a way to halt the Swedish speed, dropping a 5–1 loss in front of a capacity crowd.
Carleton played classic tough Canadian hockey, but the Swedes' quick, crafty European game was simply overwhelming.
The first period was all Sweden, dominating puck possession while setting a high tempo and netting two goals.
The Ravens controlled the second, but could not put the puck past netminder Jacob Markström. The rally forced Sweden to take penalties, but Carleton could not capitalize on the man advantage.
The third period continued to be plagued by penalties, as tempers flared and the score became lopsided. But with four minutes left in the game, the Ravens lit the lamp, sending the crowd to their feet.
Although international hockey is known for its clean, gentlemen-like play, this game had a much higher intensity. From scrums in front of the net, to one-on-one battles and verbal disputes, fans got their money's worth.
The clash between countries showcased hard-nosed hitting and highlight-reel goals, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
With seven players from the Swedish team drafted to the National Hockey League in the first round, the Carleton community got a preview of international talent at a professional level.
