Investigation of downtown fire underway

An investigation is under way to determine the cause of a night-time fire that raged through an 18-unit rooming house, and has left a dozen people homeless.

The fire started in a second-story bathroom at 85 Park Ave., near Elgin Street, around 1 a.m Wednesday. It took the strength of 10 fire trucks and 34 firefighters to get the blaze under control in less than an hour.

One man was rescued from a third-floor window by firefighters, but no other injuries were reported.

The fire has caused an estimated $75,000 in damage to the building, and it is estimated there is a loss of $25,000 for the items inside the apartment.

This disaster has followed a string of apartment fires in the past month. On Jan. 18, a fire completely destroyed another 18-unit apartment complex in the Glebe.

The Ottawa Citizen reports that since November, 200 people in Ottawa have lost their homes due to fire.
