Ottawans contribute to medal haul

Several athletes from Ottawa or with Ottawa connections helped Canada to third place in the medal standings – it’s most successful Olympic Games ever

Speed Skating
Speed skater Kristina Groves led the pack walking away from the games with a silver and bronze in the ladies’ 1,500-metres speed skating race and the ladies’ 3,000-metres race, respectively. These added to her previous two medals, earned at the 2006 Torino Olympic Winter Games.

Thirty-three-year old Groves grew up in Ottawa and attended Brookfield Public School.

Curling
John Morris helped the Canadian men’s curling team win the gold on Saturday. Morris, who plays as the third for Kevin Martin’s team, defeated Norway 6-3 to win the round-robin tournament.

The Canadian team finished the games as the first curling team to go undefeated during the Olympics. Thirty-one year old Morris grew up in Ottawa and started curling at the Navy Curling Club at the age of five, and later curled at the Ottawa Curling Club.

Figure Skating
Ottawa native Patrick Chan finished fifth overall at the men’s figure skating finals.

Nineteen-year old Chan earned a seventh place finish in the men’s short program with a total of 81.12 points on Tuesday. He ranked fourth in the free skating program, with a total of 160.30 points, to earn a combined total of 241.24 points for the fifth-place finish.

Chan was born in Ottawa and later grew up in Toronto, where he currently lives.

Hockey
Dan Boyle helped the Canadian men’s hockey team defeat Team USA during the men`s hockey gold medal game on Sunday.

The 33-year-old defenceman, who normally plays for the NHL’s San Jose Sharks, was on the ice with three of his fellow Sharks, including Joe Thorton, Patrick Marleau and Dany Heatley.
