Parole office stays put for now

Some Centretown residents are upset that the parole office located near Elgin Street Public School now won’t move to its new location until early 2011.

In November 2009, federal Public Works Christian Paradis said the office would be relocated to 126 Bank St. by this spring.

But Ana Paquete, the Ottawa parole office director, says Corrections Canada now plans to move the office only by early 2011.

Activist Albert Galpin, who has campaigned tirelessly to move the office from its present site, says the government must be held to its earlier promises.

The government has a policy of not locating parole offices within 300 metres of schools, however, Paquete says that offenders no longer report to the current Gilmour Street location.
