Candidate won’t chase sign complaint

A candidate for councillor in Somerset Ward said Wednesday he won’t challenge the landlord who forced a tenant to remove his campaign sign.

In a recent press release, Don Fex claimed that an unidentified landlord in his ward required a tenant to remove one of his campaign signs from her window.

Fex said in an interview he contacted Elections Ottawa and was told the rules are ambiguous and don't have it spelled out that landlords can't take tenants' signs down.

Kathy Bergeron, a spokesperson for Elections Ottawa, said a landlord has the right to require tenants to take down signs on their property.

When he asked how to lodge a further complaint, Fex said he was told he’d need to get a lawyer.

Fex said the tenant involved didn’t want to be identified, fearing a backlash from the landlord.

If the tenant was willing to come forward, Fex said he’d pursue the matter.

“If she was, I would definitely go tooth and nail,” he said.
