Ottawa developer Claridge Homes won its battle to build a 16-storey condominium tower on Lisgar Street, according to a report being tabled at next Monday’s planning and environment committee meeting.
The report will detail a July decision made by the Ontario Municipal Board to allow the developer to build the tower, despite city council’s earlier rejection of the developer’s rezoning application. In 2008, Claridge Homes requested the rezoning of a Lisgar Street property to allow the construction of the condo tower. The city rejected that application last summer.
According to committee documents, the main reason for the rejection was that Centretown zoning was “in a state of flux.” At the time, council had already asked for a review of Mid-Centretown-Area zoning. Claridge Homes appealed the decision to the OMB in late 2009.
According to OMB documents, the board overturned council’s decision because the building plan put forward by Claridge Homes followed both provincial and city policies on urban intensification.
According to committee documents, there are already 15 and 17-storey buildings near the proposed site.
