Somerset has higher voter turnout in second round of advanced polls

Somerset Ward voter turnout was up in the most recent round of advanced polls, after a low turnout during the first round of polls two weeks ago.

According to city numbers, 1,809 Somerset voters participated in the second and final round of advanced polls for the 2010 municipal election.  In the first round, only 365 voted.

With an approximately 23,137 registered voters in the ward, Somerset’s voter turnout jumped from less than two per cent in the first advance poll to almost eight per cent in the second round, held last Thursday.

In the last municipal election, voter turnout dropped from the first advanced poll to the second. In 2006, approximately eight per cent of registered voters participated the first time around, while a little over two per cent made it out for the second.

In 2006, Somerset tied Cumberland Ward for the fifth lowest total out of all wards, with a 50 per cent turnout rate in all three rounds.

This year, only Bay Ward had more voters in the second round than Somerset, with 3,879. The Rideau-Rockliffe ward had the highest total in the first round, with 1,766 participants, but the lowest total in the second round, with 514.

In total, 25,324 voters took part in the second round, compared to 16,857 the first round.

The final polling day for the election will be Oct. 25.
