Labour Department charges public works over 2009 boiler explosion

The federal Labour Department has charged Public Works and Government Services Canada in relation with an explosion that killed one man last year.

“As Canada's Labour Minister I take my mandate for the health and safety of workers very seriously. Employers under federal jurisdiction are required to meet occupational health and safety requirements of the Canada Labour Code,” Labour Minister Lisa Raitt said in a news release Tuesday.

The public works department is facing charges of violating labour code requirements after a boiler exploded at its plant on Cliff Street, near the Supreme Court, in October 2009. The accident injured three public works employees and killed one.

Raitt expressed her sympathies to the families of the victims and said she takes her responsibilities very seriously with regards incidents such as this.
