NCC approves second phase of LeBreton

The National Capital Commission permitted construction of the second phase of the Lebreton Flats redevelopment plan at a public meeting held Wednesday, said Mario Tremblay, a spokesperson for the NCC.

The next phase, which will see 160 new homes built over the next two years, consists of one six-storey condo block, a block of townhouses and an eight-storey building, Tremblay said

The NCC approved plans submitted by Claridge Homes, despite the fact that the developers failed to abide by the agency’s guidelines in the first phase

Planning officials had to reassert the original plan when construction was underway, as the work deviated from the original design. Key issues included landscaping concerns and the removal of stairways on Fleet Street Mews, which were an integral part of the design, Tremblay said.

Some changes were agreed upon at Wednesday’s meeting. Further discussions are in progress to work out differences as the NCC and Claridge goes into phase two.

If all goes well, construction with begin in 2012.
