The Metro YMCA in Centretown was renamed on Thursday evening, following a record $2 million donation by the prominent Taggart family.
In honour of the contribution the facility at 180 Argyle Ave. has been renamed the Taggart Family Y.
Brothers Tim and Keith Taggart presented the donation on behalf of the Taggart family in support of the Strengthening the Heart of our Community Capital Campaign.
The donation is the largest received in the organization’s 144-year history.
“We are grateful to the Taggart Family for this historic gift,” said Nancy Cook-Johnson, chairwoman of the board of directors.
“From the start they have given outstanding leadership to the campaign. Their gift is a true reflection of their commitment to the Y.”
According to the YMCA, the campaign has now raised $11.4 million of its $15 million goal.
The Taggart Family Y is currently undergoing renovations that will improve and modernize its 40-year-old facilities. There are also plans for new programs and services.
