Part of the main police station at Elgin and Catherine streets was evacuated Tuesday morning after a suspicious package containing white powder was found.
The Ottawa Fire Services hazardous materials team was called to police headquarters shortly after 8 a.m., to examine the package, which was found in the mailroom on the second floor.
CBC Ottawa reported the package was deemed not dangerous.
Members of the investigative unit located beside the mailroom were evacuated but most of the building remained open.
Ottawa Police Service Const. Henri Lanctôt said it’s unusual to receive a call about a suspicious package at a police station.
“Yes, it’s probably rare,” he said. “It doesn’t happen very often.”
The Ottawa Sun reported that three people who came into contact with the white powder have been isolated, but Lanctôt could not confirm that report.
