Several Centretown bus routes may be changed in an effort to save $22million by 2012, OC Transpo general manager Alain Mercier said Wednesday.
More than 50 routes may be affected by the cuts, which will see some routes shortened, rerouted or cancelled altogether.
The current network has many indirect or overlapping routes which are ineffective and costing the city too much money, said OC Transpo’s business plan.
The No. 18 bus that goes from Carlingwood to St. Laurent and runs through Centretown is one example. Under the proposed changes it may see the removal of inefficient local loops and crescents.
According to the business plan, over 90 per cent of transit users will see no changes but would benefit from shorter and more direct routes. About 95 per cent of customers will still be within a five-minute walk of at least one route.
The final report will be presented before the commission on March 23.
