Ottawa Police and RCMP pipe bands celebrate 10-year partnership

The Ottawa Police Service Pipe Band and the RCMP Pipes, Drums and Dancers are celebrating a decade of partnership with a joint concert in Centretown this Sunday.

The concert will take place at 2 p.m. at the Dominion-Chalmers United Church, at 355 Cooper St.

The concert will showcase highland dancing, Scottish singing, bagpipes, and drums.

Attendees will be treated to performances by the pipe bands and dance teams of both the RCMP and the Ottawa Police, as well as Ottawa vocalists Garth and Brad Hampson, accompanied by Luba Sluzar-Pope.

Andrew Hayes, an Ottawa Police piper and a founding member of the RCMP Pipes and Drums, will also perform.

The Ottawa Police pipe band was founded in 1969 in order to improve public relations and contribute to the memorials of slain police officers. Members include serving police officers and civilian volunteers, under the direction of pipe major Jamie Ritchie and drum major Chris Renwick.

Created in 2000, the RCMP Pipes and Drums initially consisted of several pipers and drummers from the Ottawa Police band. Now, the band includes citizen volunteers and members of the RCMP.

Concert tickets cost $20, with partial proceeds going to Big Brothers Big Sisters Ottawa. Children under 12 are free.
