Ottawa Centre MPP Yasir Naqvi today formally launched the start of the provincial Liberal government’s new tuition grant.
Starting this month, students across Ontario can now apply for grants worth 30 per cent of the cost of an average tuition.
That means university students can save up to $1,600 per year and college students can save up to $730 per year.
The grant only applies to fulltime college or university students in Ontario whose parents earn less than $160,000 per year.
Students who are already eligible for OSAP are automatically entered to receive the grant.
Speaking at Carleton University, Naqvi said the 30-per-cent grant is set to keep pace with increases in the average Ontario tuition. That means even if tuition changes the grant will remain at 30 per cent.
Naqvi said he hopes grants such as these will help ease the high cost of schooling and encourage more students to study in Ontario.
