Ottawans gathered at the Rideau Canal locks downtown on Aug. 5 to celebrate the birthday of Lieutenant-Colonel John By (born Aug. 7, 1776), who was sent to Canada from Britain in 1826 to supervise the construction of the Rideau Canal. The festival took participants back in time with traditional activities, displays and performances.
