Chinatown fire leaves more than a dozen homeless

More than a dozen people are homeless after an early morning fire in a Chinatown apartment building.

The fire in the four-unit building caused structural damages of $300,000 and damages of $100,000 for contents inside the units, according to media reports. The Red Cross and Salvation Army are providing food and clothing to residents.

Fire crews were called to respond to the fire just after 6:30 a.m. when people reported heavy smoke coming from the roof. Crews put out the fire after two hours, the Ottawa Fire Services Twitter account said.

Booth Street between Somerset and Albert streets was closed to traffic for hours as firefighters responded to the fire, according to media reports.

Officials said one firefighter was taken to hospital for stitches to his hand and no residents were injured, the Ottawa Fire Services Twitter account said.

Officials are investigating the cause of the fire.

This is the second fire in Chinatown in a week. Last Sunday a kitchen fire in a Lebreton Street house left six people homeless and $450,000 in damages.
