Sparks Street building to be demolished for new project

The Ottawa Heritage Committee finalized plans today to demolish an old building on Sparks Street and make room for a new project.

The project, overseen by the NCC and Ashcroft, will include a hotel, condos and an 18-story tower facing Queen Street.

“The project will be the revitalization of the building,” said Sally Coutts of the Ottawa Heritage Committee.

The current building, located at 110 Sparks Street, was constructed in 1870. Since that time it has been used to house a number of businesses like Bryson’s department store, Butterworth’s hardware store and E.R. Fisher menswear, according to the Ottawa Citizen.

Now, the building is far too old to maintain or fix, but the original doors and windows will be saved and reinstalled in the new building, said Coutts.

Another newer building located next door, which was formerly a bank, is to be demolished as well to make room for the project.

Coutts said the new project will create more living space and as a result, will bring more foot traffic to Sparks Street and the surrounding area.

Before any work is done on the project, the plans will have to be approved by city council and its planning committee.
