Three people in hospital after fire on Anderson Street

An early morning fire on Anderson Street sent three people to hospital and caused damages estimated at $50,000, according to media.

Firefighters were called to 26 Anderson St. at around 2 a.m. after a fire broke out on the second floor of a two-storey, wood-framed residence.

A tenant on the main floor of the building woke up to go to the bathroom and smelled smoke, Marc Messier, of the Ottawa Fire Service, said on Twitter.

The tenant and his wife were able to wake the tenant on the upper floor, who was forced to exit through the second floor window, said Messier. Firefighters rescued the man from the overhang above the main entrance of the home.

Firefighters had the fire under control and all occupants out of the building shortly before 2:15 a.m.

Messier said that the "very close call" for the residents of the home was the result of a cooking fire.
