Summer vacation and unusually low turnouts at donation clinics have contributed to Canada’s most serious shortage in blood inventory since 2008. Canadian Blood Services has put out an urgent call for volunteers to give blood and eight clinics are being held in Centretown between Oct. 28 and Nov. 27.

The Canadian War Museum and the Parnassos Hellenic Cultural Society of Ottawa are recognizing the 50th anniversary of the start of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Cyprus on Oct. 30.
Death Disco night dies, but scene lives on
After providing Ottawa’s tight-knit goth community with a home for nearly seven years, Swizzles’ Death Disco club night closed for good earlier this month.
The weekly event grew to be an institution at the Queen Street venue. Attendees could regularly hear offbeat music including gothic rock, rhythmic noise and electro-industrial – niche genres that few Ottawa locations touch.
